Don’t Quit Your Day Job…Yet

The first question every aspiring entrepreneurs ask themselves is, “Should I quit my job to pursue my passion?

Here’s my advice, don’t quit your job…yet.

If you love your job, that’s obviously not a problem for you. But I’m talking about those who are trying to make their passion their full-time gig.

Most of us have that certain something that we love to do after work and in the weekends. It is what we call passion. It would be awesome if we do our passion and make a living out of it.

But if your boss is horrible, if you hate your job or your office is a toxic place for you, get out of there!

Then find another job.

But then,

If you’re thinking of quitting your job to pursue your passion, here are some reasons you need to think otherwise.

You need financial stability

Before I became a designer, I was a software engineer for about 5 years. It was an awesome job and of course the pay was great. It was the perfect situation for me – at that time!

But along the way that job became uninspiring. It came to a point that going to the office was a labor.

So I quit! Without any plan I quit!

The first day of freedom from the corporate life was great. I was living the life. I had the time and the money. For a time I was like a millionaire living a luxurious life.

I dabbled into designing and it was a blast. Marc Anthony said, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” I had so much fun doing it that it was never work for me. I wanted to do it forever.

If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. – Marc Anthony

Then one day, I realized that my bank account was almost ZERO!

See, I loved every bit of designing yet it was not making me money. I was putting the time yet there was no cashflow. There I was doing following my passion yet I was broke.

My circumstances and yours are very different and what happened to me might not happen to you. But I want to spare you the agony that you might  go through.

Let’s be honest, you need money to survive.

You would also need that money to be able to do more of your passion. You need the finances to be able to support your passion, while you are still developing it.

Your side passion might not be profitable at first

Your passion might not be able to give you the cashflow you need at the start. In fact you might even be taking money out of your pocket to continue doing your passion. If you didn’t have that job, how will you continue to doing your passion?

Success is a process

Success is not an overnight thing. We hear and read stories of someone who suddenly became a millionaire because a company bought their app and we think that we can also become an overnight successes.

But that is not true!

If you ask those successful people, they will tell you the story of all the years of struggle and sacrifice before they became successful.

You must realize that it will be the same for us. We will have to work day and night chasing our passion for it to become successful.

It’s a long process and you need that financial support to be able to help you along the way.

Remember, the turtle wins over the hare.

Those are just some of the reasons that quitting your job right away may not be the best idea. There are lots of other reasons but these are the reasons that struck me the most. It has helped me in my journey to becoming a successful designer/entrepreneur.

As much helped it gave me, I hope it will help you as well. I wish you all the best in your entrepreneurial journey as you chase your passion.

In my next blog post, I will share to you what you can do to pursue your passion while still having a day job.
